If your .co.uk, .org.uk, me.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk or .net.uk domain was registered before 28th October 2013 you have the rights to the equivalent .uk domain providing there was no other corresponding .co.uk, .org.uk, me.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk or .net.uk registered before the registration date of your domain.
From June 2019 this is all set to change. Domain names ending .uk will become available for anyone to purchase.
4 reasons why you should register your .uk domain name(s)
- Protect your brand – after 25th June 2019 the domain will be in the public market and anybody could register the domain.
- It’s more memorable – having the .uk domain will be shorter and easier to remember than your current domain.
- Don’t leave it too late – if your domain is registered by someone else you may not be able to get it back.
- Cost – someone else may register your .uk domain name and then try to sell it back to you for a far higher rate than you would pay for it now.
We advise you to speak directly to the registrar of your existing domain name who should be able to arrange for your .uk domain name to be registered. In some cases you may be able to get the domain registered free for the first year.
Once you have the .uk domain name registered all you need to do is speak to your website hosting company where you can either move your website onto the new domain name or re-direct the .uk domain name to your current website.
